The MALDI-Imaging Lipidomics Service Is Now Available Through Lipidomics Platform

October 13, 2021

As a division of Creative Proteomics, Lipidomics is dedicated to providing cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based lipidomics services for biomedical research institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. The company has recently announced the fully-developed MALDI-Imaging Lipidomics Service to research the distribution of lipids in tissues.

Lipidomics MALDI imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) is a very powerful tool for studying lipid distribution in tissues. MALDI is an ion source that is very compatible with the introduction of thin tissue sections. Therefore, MALDI can be used to image a large number of endogenous lipids of different lipid classes. For many of these lipids, mass spectrometric imaging is the only way to investigate their spatial distribution. Since lipidomics profiles are of great importance for studying developmental or pathological processes in tissue sections, MALDI-Imaging can serve as a useful tool for biomarker discovery.

In lipidomics research, MALDI imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) is a powerful tool for studying lipid distribution in tissues. Tissue is the main manifestation of a very wide range of diseases, so it is one of the main pillars of clinical research and diagnosis. The study of morphology and molecular tissue characteristics is the basis for generating knowledge about clinical pathological entities, diagnosis, prediction and prognosis. The lipid composition varies from tissue to tissue, even within different cells of the tissue.

“MALDI-Imaging is a well-known solution provided by Creative Proteomics. The result gives both molecular–histological maps from the localization and identification of lipid biomolecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and can detect up to a thousand lipid species. To quantify lipid abundances, imaging data can be standardized to total ion current and subjected to statistical tests appropriate for the experimental questions.” said Creative Proteomics’s Senior Scientist.

The versatility of MALDI-IMS opens up new areas in many fields, including but not limited to:

  1. Spatial distribution imaging of lipid molecules in animal and plant tissues
  2. Spatial distribution imaging of small molecular metabolites in animal and plant tissues
  3. Spatial distribution imaging of biomarkers in pathological tissues such as tumors
  4. Imaging the spatial distribution of drugs and their metabolites in tissues
  5. Molecular imaging of medicinal plant tissue sections
