Alfa Chemistry Introduced Functionalized Nanomaterials
NEW YORK, NY - Feb 28, 2020 - On February 20, 2020, Alfa Chemistry announced to introduce a wide range of functionalized nanomaterials to meet the increasing demand from their global customers.
Due to their small size, large surface area, and unique properties, nanomaterials have been widely used in nanomedicine, environmental restoration, and other catalytic applications. The surface coating of a nanomaterial determines many of its physical and chemical properties, especially stability, solubility and targeting functions. Functionalized nanomaterials refer to hybrid materials with novel characteristics and functions obtained by introducing small molecules or polymers on the surface of nanomaterials.
Functionalized nanomaterials not only possess the existing properties of nanomaterials, but are also given other additional properties. For example, functionalized nanomaterial-based catalysts can be used to catalyze many known organic reactions such as hydrogenation, dehalogenation, and organic oxidation reduction and C-C coupling reactions. Specially designed functionalized nanomaterials such as superparamagnetic iron oxide, quantum dots, and up- and down-converted lanthanide nanoparticles have special properties such as specific drug delivery, plasma effects, optical and imaging properties, and excellent cell permeability, therefore these functionalized nanomaterials can be used to improve the treatment of many existing diseases such as cancer.
Gold Nanoparticles (GNPs)
Gold nanoparticles are composed of a gold core and a double ion layer surrounded by an outer layer. When gold nanoparticles with antibodies or other biological probes are aggregated under the action of the target molecule, they will show a significantly different color from that in the dispersed state due to changes in their plasma absorption peaks, so they can be used for rapid immunoassay. Gold nanoparticles can be used for imaging of tumor vasculature, providing a basis for the diagnosis of potential tumors. Gold nanoparticles can also be used as drug carriers to improve the pharmacokinetics of drugs, reduce non-specific side effects and achieve higher doses of targeted administration.
Functionalized Gold Nanorods (GNRs)
As a typical functionalized nanomaterial product, functionalized gold nanorods (GNRs) have been widely used in the biomedical field due to their unique optical properties and excellent biocompatibility. There are two main ways to modify the surface of GNRs: one way is to combine small molecular compounds with GNRs through chemical bonds; the other way is to use organic or inorganic materials (such as surfactants, polymer materials, DNA biomolecules and silica) to directly encapsulate NRS for functional modification. Many small molecule compounds such as sulfhydryl compounds and adipic acid can form strong chemical bonds with the surface of NRs, and after being functionalized by chemical or biological methods, they can be widely used in biomedical fields such as biological separation, protein detection and medical imaging. Surfactants with functional groups can bind to the surface of NRs to change the surface properties of NRS. Suitable surfactants for binding NRs include chloroform, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and polyethylene glycol.
