Comparison Facts about Monoclonal and Polyclonal Immunoglobulins

November 26, 2014

SHIRLEY, NY - Nov 27, 2014 - Immunoglobulins, or you can call them antibodies, are glycoprotein molecules that are produced by white blood cells.

Immunoglobulins are important for immunology since they can specifically recognize and bind to particular antigens, such as bacteria or viruses and play role in their destruction. Of course this is a very complex process to state so we pass it here. Immunoglobulins have various isotypes: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG and IgM, each of them differs in biological features, structure, target specificity and distribution. Therefore, the assessment of the immunoglobulin isotype can provide useful insight into complex humoral immune response.

Each immunoglobulin is secreted by a different antibody-producing plasma cell/white blood cell. The fact that the antibodies found in serum are collectively produced by many plasma cells, they are named as polyclonal. In nature, this is an advantage in terms of fighting infections; however it also limits their use as research tools due to the heterogeneity of them. Then a breakthrough emerged-the production of monoclonal immunoglobulins for research purposes. Monoclonal immunoglobulins are produced by removing B cells from the spleen of an animal that has been challenged with an antigen and then subsequently fused with an immortal myeloma tumor cell line.

But what’s the difference? Let’s find it here:
