Bio-IT Community Honors New Products from Boulder BioComputing, Dantech Corp, The Hyve, Velsera
The Best of Show competition is a new product competition open to any exhibiting company at the Bio-IT World Conference & Expo. Eligible products must be commercially available and released (or updated) since the last event. Selection is not based on level of sponsorship or exhibit participation. Instead, members of the Bio-IT World community voted on their favorite new products during the event.
We gave two Rookie of the Year Awards for new Bio-IT World exhibitors with products that caught the attention of the community—in a tie! The winners were Boulder BioComputing for SciData XLerate v1.0 and Dantech Corporation for MLADU V1.5.
We gave one Bedrock Award for a company’s consistent dedication to innovation, listening to the community’s needs, and striving to meet them. This year we honored The Hyve, for BioChatter V0.9.0.
Boulder BioComputing's SciData XLerate delivers on a very focused goal: make it easy to develop, run, and maintain a large, robust collection of Excel parsers - "loaders" in our parlance. Available as a command-line tool, interactive Web App, or embeddable library on Linux, Windows, or macOS, SciData XLerate provides a streamlined process for developing and deploying collections of Excel loaders. We take a "batteries included" approach that includes a collection of CRO-inspired loaders include pre-built loaders for most common CROs and assay formats (ask about our PK loaders!). SciData XLerate's "secret sauce" is its simple domain-specific language (DSL) and transformation engine that yields unique strengths: (1) Speed and simplicity: entirely new loaders can be authored quickly and easily (usually in a couple of hours), without sacrificing flexibility. (2) Flexibility: SciData XLerate can handle a TON of variation in placement, location, and formatting of data all within the same loader, without sacrificing ease of maintenance. Never again will the ad hoc insertion of a new Excel column break a loader. (3) Robustness: A powerful heuristics-based matching engine aided by user-defined controlled vocabularies allows for variation across input files ("mice", "Mouse", "muose") to be handled gracefully and robustly while ensuring standardized output ("mouse"). Additionally, extensions enable direct publication of processed reports into common data platforms such as Revvity Signals, CDD Vault, and L7's ESP. We take pride in this product tag line: The most boring but most useful application ever written."

BioChatter is an open-source Python framework designed to bridge the gap between conversational AI and biomedical research. It provides a transparent and flexible alternative to proprietary AI platforms, empowering researchers and smaller organizations to develop their own AI-driven tools without the constraints of vendor lock-in. With a modular architecture, BioChatter allows users to create a customized AI ecosystem tailored to their specific research needs. It supports interchangeable LLMs, enabling seamless integration of both open-source and locally hosted models. Additionally, it connects with the knowledge graph framework BioCypher [3], vector databases, and public APIs like OncoKB and BLAST, making it highly adaptable to various biomedical applications. BioChatter simplifies AI deployment by offering a backend for data integration, a REST API server, and a user-friendly web interface. These features reduce the need for extensive software development, allowing researchers to focus on their work rather than on technical implementation. As an open-source project, BioChatter fosters a collaborative research environment. Its active community ensures continuous improvement, regular updates, and long-term sustainability. By prioritizing transparency, flexibility, and scalability, BioChatter enables researchers to fully leverage LLMs in biomedical research—without the restrictions of proprietary systems.
