Harvard Medical Creates Department of Biomedical Informatics

April 16, 2015

April 16, 2015 | Harvard Medical School has appointed Isaac Kohane, co-director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics and director of an informatics program at Boston Children's Hospital, to be the first chair of a newly-created department of biomedical informatics. The management and interpretation of large, complex biomedical data has become increasingly central to both the research and clinical roles of major institutions like Harvard Medical; however, the bioinformaticians at the heart of this science have rarely had the same opportunities for recognition and career advancement as traditional biologists. Kohane hopes that his department will have the chance to more systematically incorporate biological data analysis into diagnostic and treatment decisions at the large Boston-area network of Harvard-affiliated hospitals.
