February 3, 2015 | In the wake of President Obama's proposal for a coordinated Precision Medicine Initiative, Gina Kolata at The New York Times writes that the program's real promise is not mass sequencing or data collection, but a database architecture that would allow patient information from multiple research projects to be smoothly combined. For a relatively small investment, a project like this could make it much easier for scientists to pursue the kinds of cross-institutional studies that have already delivered important insights about cancer and heart disease.
