Thieme chooses TEMIS’s Luxid® Webstudio for thesaurus management

January 20, 2015

STUTTGART AND HEIDELBERG, GERMANY - Jan 20, 2015 - TEMIS, the leading provider of Semantic Content Enrichment solutions for the Enterprise, today announced that Thieme, the renowned German medical publisher based in Stuttgart, has chosen TEMIS’s Luxid® Webstudio to help its teams manage their thesauri and terminologies. Thanks to Luxid® Webstudio, the different departments of the group will be able to manage, expand and customize the complex vocabularies they use to semantically enrich their content.

The Luxid® semantic enrichment platform has already been in use at Thieme for several years in a whole range of projects to process content in domains such as radiology, veterinary medicine, nursing care, osteopathy and chemistry. With the acquisition of this additional Luxid® WebStudio module, Thieme will be able to manage multiple thesauri easily and autonomously.

“We had been looking for some time for a solution enabling our experts to manage our multilingual thesauri efficiently and easily,“ said Ralf Buttermann, Head of IT, Thieme. “What makes Luxid® Webstudio really powerful is its combination of a lot of productivity features with best-in-class ergonomics. The benefit is that our subject matter experts can now fully concentrate their efforts on the value-added part of their job.”

Working on large vocabularies like medical thesauri is often a painful task: Synonym lists must be maintained and extended, scope and structure of thesauri must be adjusted to project requirements, and indexing results must be rapidly checked and corrected. With Luxid® Webstudio, Thieme now has at its disposal an intuitive web application that allows medical subject matter experts to efficiently focus on the core of their mission, while keeping complexity out of the way.

In order to increase end-users’ productivity in the context of everyday thesaurus management, Luxid® Webstudio provides them with advanced ergonomics as well as two more distinctive features enabled by the platform’s underlying Natural Language Processing layer:

  • Real-time Preview, that enables users to verify in real-time how well their ontology applies to content, and to rapidly correct gaps from the same interface, for example by adding variants or adjusting extraction mechanisms.
  • Term Suggestion, that identifies concepts that are mentioned in the user’s corpus but are not yet included in the ontology in order, thus facilitating thesaurus enrichment.

“Thieme’s choice of Luxid® WebStudio is a pivotal market signal for TEMIS,” said Stefan Geißler, Managing Director, TEMIS Deutschland and TEMIS Chief Innovation Officer. “A customer like Thieme with its distributed teams, multiple disciplines and publishing subsidiaries, and complex thesauri, represents a challenging diversity of use cases. Luxid® Webstudio’s selection validates our platform strategy combining thesaurus management and semantic enrichment into an integrated, efficient workflow supporting distributed teams.”

Launched in July 2014 as part of the Luxid® 7 platform, Luxid® WebStudio is a natively multi-user, collaborative web application enabling users to create, edit and maintain an ontology while governing the way ontological objects are recognized by the Luxid® semantic enrichment pipeline. It also leverages the platform’s Natural Language Processing layer to drive added-value features enabling the real-time preview of semantic enrichment results and to automatically suggest relevant terms for inclusion in the ontology. These powerful features make end-users more autonomous in creating or maintaining their ontology and the corresponding semantic enrichment pipeline, translating into considerably simplified and accelerated workflows, enabling improved time-to-market and lower total cost of ownership.
