Mouse Models, Wayward Trials, and New Guidelines

April 8, 2014 | A March 26 Nature comment is getting press today. Steve Perrin, chief scientific officer at the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge, Mass., is frustrated with the mouse models driving ALS research. The preclinical studies are not rigorously designed, Perrin asserts, and their findings support clinical trials that ultimately fail. The Therapy Development Institute released a series recommendations to, "reduce the number of false positives in animal trials and prevent unwarranted clinical trials."
