Incidental Findings in the Genomic Age

May 6, 2013 | The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) recommended that all labs doing genomic sequencing (either exome or whole genome) look at 57 genes for mutations that could cause one of 24 life-threatening, but treatable conditions. The recommendation came a month ago, and prompted criticism about patient autonomy. But Robert Green points out that reporting incidental findings has always been common practice in medicine.
