Challenges and Luck in Clinical Genomics

December 19, 2012 | Three years after Nic Volker (see, Seize the New, Laying the Clinical Genomics Pipeline in Wisconsin), researchers and physicians discussed advances and challenges in genomic medicine this week at Marquette University. Today, the sequeincing and analysis that saved Volker can be done in a couple of days, but that hasn't made it mainstream. "A lot of things did go very well for Nic," said David Bick, a professor of pediatrics who works on sequencing cases for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin. "Another way to look at it is that there was going to be a Nic somewhere in the United States. It was just a matter of when and where. It happened to be here and that was great."
