Craig Venter's Maryland academic institute and his company, Synthetic Genomics, are working to develop a machine capable of sequencing and "beaming back" data from the red planet. Jonathan Rothberg, founder of Ion Torrent, is working to equip his company's Personal Genome Machine for a similar task. Technology Review
