Video: Nancy Kelley on the New York Genome Center

August 23, 2012 | Nancy Kelley, the founding executive director of the New York Genome Center (NYGC), recently spoke on camera with Bio-IT World about the current progress and future plans for the new genome center currently under construction in Manhattan. Kelley traveled to Providence, RI, last week, to give the opening talk at CHI’s Next-Generation Sequencing conference, where she discussed current progress in building the NYGC, which is supported by 11 founding academic institutions in and around New York.   

Kelley and her colleagues are keeping up a whirlwind pace to ensure that the center opens on time in the middle of 2013. She recently signed a 20-year lease for the center’s permanent home at 101 Avenue of the Americas, after reviewing scores of potential sites. The center will occupy the lower half of the building, which is in the SoHo district of Manhattan.   

But as Kelley explained in the interview, the NYGC is already operating, launching joint projects with collaborators, leasing temporary lab space with Rockefeller University, building an innovation center (which will feature new Ion Proton sequencers from Life Technologies), and recruiting for various scientific, informatics and administrative positions.
