How Darwin Can Fight Cancer

July 5, 2012

July 4, 2012 | A new paper in Nature co-authored by two leading scientists -- molecular oncologist Bert Vogelstein and evolutionary expert Martin Nowak -- suggests a way to use the mathematics of evolution to predict the spread of cancer, and thereby treat it far more effectively. The researchers found that drug-resistant tumor cell mutations appeared in the blood of colon cancer patients five to seven months later, but crucially determined that they were present before treatment rather than developing in response to it.
